The Worst Way to Start a New Year

I have a lovely little Vauxhall Meriva that I bought used a couple of years ago.  When we got it, it was 4 years old and had 20K miles on it and three years later we've managed to clock up another 30K miles so its not a "new kid" by any means but it has aside from a few glitches been reasonably problem free and quite a nice ride.

Unfortunately today - the first working day of the New Year for me - I came down in the morning to find that someone had decided to break into it!  Now as we don't really keep anything significantly valuable in there, the only thing that was taken was our SatNav (GPS) but its not really what was taken its more the fact that someone would do it in the first place!

To some extent you can understand people breaking into the expensive cars - understand but not excuse mind! - but this little one was hardly that!  Considering we bought it used from a dealer at £5K and its probably worth only £2K now its hardly "valuable" to anyone except us who depend on it!

I guess the one thing that I have to thankful for is that no one was hurt by this - physically I mean.  Financially I now have to replace my SatNav - about £120, buy a car alarm - probably also £100 and report this to the police and my insurance ... while I'm not planning on claiming anything on my insurance I expect that this is still something I need to let them know happened - I'll have to check this with some other people as the one thing I don't need on top of this is to have my premiums go up because of this next year!

The thing that really gets me is that this is a safe street - or at least we always thought so and speaking to the neighbours afterwards they say the same thing - and we always felt comfortable and welcome here.  While I know that this sort of action is not the same as having your home broken into or getting mugged (or worse), it really makes you wonder about people and why they act in a certain manner.  The worst thing now is that aside from the added expense I expect I'll spend quite a bit of time just looking at people more closely and wondering if they were the one ... its a sad and horrible start to a New Year that I was expecting to be so much better.
