Summary

Rally Cry (Lost Regiment) - The First novel in the Lost Regiment Series details the struggles and stories of the 35th Maine and 44th New York Light Artillery. This Civil War era regiment is transported by a "tunnel of light" from Earth to the Planet Valennia.

The wormhole deposits them near a city of feudal Russians where they quickly make friends (among the peasant class) and enemies (among the ruling class). In addition to the feudal Russians on this planet, there are many different human civilizations from various past periods of Earths history.

However ... in addition to the Humans on Valennia another alien race predominates, and to them humans are simply fodder. 9-10 foot tall nomads with enormous strength that have fallen from a more advanced state and civilization, the members of the Horde have grown accustomed to Human service (and their taste!) and the arrival of the Civil War era soldiers is something they are not happy with.

In Book 1 of the Lost Regiment we are introduced to the Tugar Horde - as a Nomadic civilization there are many different tribes wandering the planet, each feasting on their own subject populations. With far greater numbers the Horde significantly outstrips the Humans in terms of warriors. However, the 35th Maine (and the 44th New York Light Artillery) have firepower on their side as well as modern weapons and tactics.

Needing to updgrade RUS society to modern standards almost overnight, the soldiers and officers introduce factories and railroads in an effort to give themselves a fighting chance against the Tugar horde.

Having destroyed more advanced invaders before through sheer weight of numbers the Horde is confident of victory. The Tugar Horde however are also on a forced march themselves to arrive before the humans are fully prepared and to restock their larders!

Let the battle begin!!!

Review

Well written and researched.  The tools and resources available to common soldiers of that era were definitely taken into account and some serious thought has obviously gone into the design of the aliens as well as their strengths and weaknesses.  As the first book in the series I definitely would recommend this to anyone and hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.
