Myers-Briggs Preferences

Your type does not determine your behavior. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is simply a categorization of how you "prefer" to behave and even this is to some extent situation dependent as while someone might be a "E" type personality (i.e. Extraversian), after a full day at work and meeting/greeting/interacting with people - their inclination at the end of the day might be towards the "I" spectrum (Intraversian).

People generally have both competing types inside them at all times - the MBTI however simply describes which type is more likely during normal circumstances and which type you have a preference towards.

The four preferences

With the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personalities are broken down into 4 different pairs as follows:

  1. E or I
  2. S or N
  3. T or F
  4. J or P

While you can only be one out of each pair, this does not mean that as a person you do not have elements of each type. MBTI simply points towards a "preference" and is not a hard and fast rule by any means.

Energy - where do you direct your energy?

  • E type - if you are more comfortable dealing with people, things and situations then your preference is for Extraversion.
  • I type - ideas, information, explanations ... internal facts and details ... then your preference is for Introversion.

Processing Information?

  • S type - facts, figures and descriptive things. Your preference is for Sensing.
  • N type - ideas, new thoughts, looking into the unknown. Your preference is for iNtuition.

Making Decisions?

  • T type - logic, analysis ... Your preference is for Thinking.
  • F type - personal beliefs, emotions ... Your preference is for Feeling.

Organization?

  • J type - planned, stable and organized...Your preference is for Judging (not to be confused with 'Judgmental', which is quite different).
  • P type - go with the flow, maintain flexibility ... Your preference is for Perception.
